Job description:

The Advanced Optical Technologies (AOT) group at DLR’s Institute of Communications and Navigation develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links between airborne carriers, such as airplanes or satellites, and an optical ground station. Adaptive Optics (AO) is a technique used to dynamically correct the adverse effects caused by atmospheric turbulence on the optical communication channel in such links. As the AOT group continues to develop and test novel AO systems capable of mitigating atmospheric turbulence, further characterization of such systems is still required.

This position will be focused on characterizing some of the AOT group’s existing AO systems and contributing to their software development. The successful applicant will work in a cooperative environment with other students and colleagues to quantify the performance and current limitations of the group’s AO systems both theoretically and experimentally. They will also support the team by contributing to the software development of the overall AO system infrastructure. This is an excellent opportunity to work in state-of-the-art research, gain experience on real optical hardware and software, all while improving your engineering skills.

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organisation.
