The Opportunity 

Cardiff School of Technologies (CST) was formally launched in 2018 and has seen rapid growth, with now over 1,000 students engaged on a range of programmes spanning computing, digital and smart technology, data science and informatics, cyber security, electronics and robotics engineering. This rapid development has necessitated the recruitment of enthusiastic academics to contribute to the establishment and growth of the School by teaching across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules and in developing the underpinning research environment in key areas. Over 20 organisations have endorsed the School including Sony, the BBC, Office for National Statistics and a wide range of digital and technology companies and colleges in the Cardiff Capital Region which are work in partnership with the University to develop and deliver applied programmes.

You will be an enthusiastic and friendly professional with excellent communication and interpersonal skills coupled with a commitment to providing an excellent student experience. An established or promising research profile in the field of Technologies or related area, and teaching experience on relevant programmes is essential. 

To be successful you will further enrich our students’ experience through your expertise and subject knowledge as evidenced through your qualifications and experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

We require academic staff able to cover delivery across a range of topics such as, but not limited to: 

  • Computer Science, with particular knowledge and expertise in data science, computational thinking, data structures and algorithms.
  • Software Engineering, with particular knowledge and expertise in modelling, software systems, programming, development and testing.
  • Human-Computer Interaction, with particular knowledge and expertise of UX and UI, underlying principles of creative and interaction design, design for computing and multimedia.
  • Games Design and Development, with particular knowledge and expertise in game design principles, implementation of mechanics in the modern game engine and asset pipelines.
  • Electronics, with knowledge and expertise in areas such as engineering mathematics, smart grids, energy storage and VLSI.

Enthusiastic about student-centred pedagogy, you will contribute to education delivery, including programme management as required, across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will also make a significant contribution to employability, and professional engagement with relevant internal and external organisations, at a regional, national and international level. 

You will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the department and to meet the qualitative and quantitative requirements for submission to the next Research Excellence Framework.

What we are looking for 

  • An in-depth knowledge of specialist subject and professional area.
  • An in-depth understanding of pedagogy.
  • An in-depth understanding of research/enterprise and scholarly activity.
  • Ability to design, develop and deliver a range of programmes at various levels.
  • Ability to review programme design on a regular basis to ensure compliance with quality standards and academic regulations and to make alterations where appropriate.
  • Ability to contribute to the achievement of the School Development Plan and the institutions strategic planning processes.
  • Ability to develop research objectives, prepare proposals, carry out independent research, referee and contribute to peer assessment.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for strategic development/improvement e.g. research projects, new courses, consultancy.
  • Ability to identify (through the analysis of appropriate management information) areas requiring improved performance e.g. student numbers, student satisfaction. 
  • Experience of HE teaching or equivalent.
  • Experience of providing academic leadership and first line support/mentoring for other colleagues.
  • Experience of engaging in pedagogic and practitioner research.
  • A good honours degree.
  • Doctoral qualification.
  • Ability to achieve Fellow Status as part of the Higher Education Academy’s Professional Recognition scheme, within agreed timescales (as soon as is practicably possible and definitely within three years of commencement of employment).
